What does it take to be a woman evangelist? It takes courage.

As an evangelist you are a unique woman. It also takes prayer, knowing you are called to the special position of ambassador for Christ.

Be sure of your calling. Our lives are distinctly different than our male counterparts. We need to find God’s personal direction for our lives. Our opportunities to share the Good News will often be different than for the men. We need to accept we are not men and there will be vastly different expectations of us and opportunities for us.

I have been doing public evangelism for twenty years, mostly internationally. In many countries around the world, the women are always separate from the men. When this is the case, we have such great opportunities to reach the women because the men can’t or don’t seem to be too concerned about the women.

What niche will I fill as an evangelist? Do you work primarily with children or women or youth? Does God give you opportunities to preach to both men and women? Maybe your calling is at home as a support and encourager to your husband. If so, lean into it!

If you are married to an evangelist and you are also called as an evangelist, theoretically, he will provide opportunities to utilize your gifts. You will make a great team. It is so wonderful for us as women to complement our husbands in ministry.

Develop your personal theology about women in ministry. Come to terms with the various scriptural interpretations of the role of women in ministry and find a place to serve and feel comfortable using your gifts.

Seek the Lord each day for making the next right decision. When the decisions are difficult, have a spiritual guide with whom you can talk, and make sure God is on the top of the list as an advisor and friend. He wants to be your companion as you walk through life. It is not just about DOING the ministry. As Christ followers, our life is about BEING in relationship with Him. BEING in love with the Savior. Remember “No Team, No Dream.” God is the best team leader you can have. His dreams are far greater than your dreams.

I find this is the most difficult part of being a Christian. It is easier to quantify our relationship with Christ by doing good works and meeting goals. This practice is so western, and it gets in the way of our relationship with God.

Watch your tongue

“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,”

James 1:19 (NIV)

“Don’t be in any rush to become a teacher, my friends. Teaching is highly responsible work. Teachers are held to the strictest standards”

James 3:1 (The Message)

As women and evangelists, we use our words in almost all we do. God has given us great trust to use words wisely. They can be dangerous, or they can be sweet as honey. Our goal is always to make our words and our lives so winsome that we are drawing many to faith in Jesus.
